To some aliens represent a threat that cannot be resolved at any known level. You can’t hide or defeat a threat that no one seems to understand. It’s fearful enough to consider a threat like a cold blooded killer or a great white shark but we can imagine ourselves getting away from these. When we consider a threat that can do anything, mentally or physically to us, we feel a sense of hopelessness and therefore a greater sense of fear, if we are so inclined to fear them!
