In my writings, I refer to God as the "First Being". I've written several articles about who God is and how God came to be (see below). As you say, Heaven or Hell is just a thought away. When we decide which way we want to go, it is our choice which direction we take. Those who choose heaven take the path of greatest resistance and those who choose hell take the path of least resistance. Just like in a gym, it is those who choose the path of greatest resistance who become the strongest.
It takes a great deal of internal strength to be immortal. Our many lives on the earth are how we learn to live as immortal people. It is the lessons we learn here that give us the strength of character to live forever in an immortal community or paradise. When we have overcome all of our challenges, like Jesus and Buddha, we are ready to take our places with them and the others who have done the work and completed the journey.
Our guides are always trying to let us know that they are there; they are always trying to teach us. When we take note of what is happening to us or around us, we begin to see things that others are too busy to see. These occurrences are always subtle, always leaving us to question. If we remain open, we can learn. If we come to conclusions, we remain those who only believe. We don't want to be believers but rather those who "know". The truth can be known if we are willing to accept it. Truth is absolute logic!
The cycle of life and death (reincarnation) ends for us when we become the type of people capable of living within an eternal immortal community. When we tell God that we wish to end the cycle of life and death and take our place with the others who have done the same, God begins to work with us.
Experiences vary but the message is always the same. "We are here and we want you to know it!"
